At this point, nobody expected a smartphone company to pack extra memory into a phone. With AI data centers swallowing up the global component supply, RAM prices are going through the roof. Yet, OnePlus apparently didn’t get the memo. Out of nowhere, the company just rolled out a brand-new, high-performance variant of the OnePlus 15R (Review), giving hardware fans a massive 16GB RAM upgrade when everyone else is downsizing.
According to retail listings spotted on Amazon India and the brand’s regional website (via Gizbot), this surprise version packs a hefty 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. Previously, if you wanted to pick up this specific device, you were strictly limited to 12GB of RAM. This unexpected third choice gives mobile enthusiasts a massive performance cushion without forcing them to drop a fortune on a traditional top-tier flagship.
Breaking down the value and performance
So, why does this extra RAM actually matter? While 12GB handles daily multitasking like a champ, demanding modern workloads—like running complex, on-device AI models or pushing intense, heavy gaming sessions—benefit big from that extra breathing room.
Aside from the expanded memory pool, the core internals of the phone remain exactly the same as the original models. You still get the high-end Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, a fast 165Hz AMOLED display boasting 3,600 nits of peak brightness. There’s also the huge 7,400mAh battery with 80W fast charging.
In the Indian market, this fresh 16GB and 512GB tier lands at INR 61,999, which converts directly to roughly $657. For comparison, the existing baseline 12GB models retail locally for INR 54,999 and INR 59,999, respectively.
Will the high-memory model head west?
As of now, this upgraded hardware option remains exclusive to India. There’s no word yet on whether this specific model will be available in the United States. For reference, the company sells a 12GB + 512GB variant in the US for $799.99. If you need less storage, you can also opt for the 12GB + 256GB version at $699.99.
However, a broader Western expansion faces some pretty complex hurdles. Industry analysts point out that OnePlus has been trimming down its global presence lately, downsizing its European corporate branches and dealing with shifting retail availability across shelves in the US market. Furthermore, multiple price increases have recently hit older catalog devices in international regions due to ongoing component scarcity.
