Apple is one of the biggest smartphone makers in the world. They have a lot of customers not just among iPhone users but also across their other products like the iPad and Mac computers. But it looks like Nothing is gunning for iPhone users, according to a recent post on Instagram by Nothing CEO Carl Pei.
Nothing wants to steal iPhone users
According to Pei, he released a video on Instagram in which he wanted to send a message to Apple. He has publicly challenged Apple, claiming that Nothing will steal “bored” iPhone users, one at a time. We have to admire his boldness, although it feels like it came out of nowhere.
We know that Apple has its fair share of rivals. However, we’re not sure if Nothing can truly be called Apple’s rival. In the Android space, that designation goes to Samsung. But hey, if Nothing wants to take on Apple, why not? In fact, Nothing has positioned itself as the anti-Apple. Pei, in the past, has argued that Apple lost its creative spark years ago. He also believes the smartphone business has flatlined.
Interestingly enough, the comments in his video aren’t exactly overwhelmingly supportive. For starters, some are saying that Nothing needs to fix its pricing. Some say that Nothing is barking up the wrong tree, especially since Nothing’s target audience is Android users. Some outright believe that the iPhone will never be replaced.
Does Nothing have what it takes?
That being said, we have to wonder if Pei is being a little overconfident in his message. On the whole smartphone business getting a bit boring, we are in agreement. Hardware has peaked, which means every new generation only offers marginal gains. It isn’t as exciting anymore compared to 10 years ago.
Sure, you could argue that Nothing’s phones are more eye-catching due to the transparent design. But if you were to slap the phone inside of a case, then its unique selling point is nonexistent. Also, at its core, it runs on Android. There is only so much customization one can do from a software perspective. Plus, Android users are used to customizing their own devices, so it’s not as if Nothing OS is completely irreplaceable.
To Nothing’s credit, they have come up with some pretty interesting ideas. The most recent being Nothing Playground, which allows users to create their own apps using AI prompts.
