Google has spent the last year dropping subtle hints and outright declarations about its AI future. Now, the company is finally pulling the plug on its legacy voice assistant. They have started sending emails warning about the shutdown date of the classic Google Assistant on Android phones and tablets, pointing to September 4.
A permanent transition across mobile devices
This rollout won’t happen overnight, but once it hits your device, the change is permanent. Over a span of several weeks following September 4, the firm will remove access to the old assistant. Once your phone updates, you won’t be able to switch back. Triggers like saying “Hey Google” or holding down the power button will launch Gemini automatically instead.
The transition reaches beyond smartphones and tablets. Paired hardware tied to your mobile device—including Wear OS smartwatches, connected headphones, and Android Auto platforms projected from your phone—will also switch to Gemini. However, a few devices are getting a temporary pass. Android-powered TVs, smart displays, and vehicles with Google built-in will retain the classic Assistant experience for now—Google plans to update those platforms down the line as well, though.
What changing to Gemini means for users
For anyone who has held out on switching, this shift marks a fundamental change in how Android handles voice commands. Google Assistant operated on predictable, hardcoded rules. It was great at simple, rapid-fire tasks like setting timers or toggling smart lights, even if it couldn’t hold a conversation. Gemini, on the other hand, relies on a generative AI model. It excels at complex queries, natural conversations, and contextual reasoning, but it can occasionally feel slower or overcomplicate basic actions.
If you own an older phone that fails to meet Gemini’s hardware requirements or reside in an unsupported region, you might keep Google Assistant a bit longer. For everyone else, the option to toggle back to the classic tool is officially reaching its end.
