Lenovo entered the handheld space with a bang when it launched the Legion Go, a device which easily allowed you to play both modern and retro games alike. Of course, the Legion Go and it siblings like the now extremely expensive Legion Go 2 aren’t real retro handhelds. They’re handheld gaming PCs that can support retro games like any other PC would. This new handheld, however, comes pre-loaded with retro games, and it’s carrying the Lenovo brand. An intriguing development, considering this handheld isn’t actually made by Lenovo.
This is where things get interesting. Because the handheld is not just pre-loaded with a bunch of retro games, it’s pre-loaded with a bunch of Nintendo games. Of course, downloading and installing Nintendo ROMs to play the games digitally is illegal and not something Nintendo takes likely. So this could end up a costly endeavor for the parties involved. Depending on how Nintendo handles the situation. Assuming it does anything at all.
The Lenovo retro handheld is made by a third-party company
While Lenovo doesn’t make this handheld, it still actually has a hand in its distribution, even if indirectly. According to Retro Rodo (via TechSpot), the handheld is made by a third-party white label company that has an agreement with Lenovo officially for the handheld. The agreement allows the handheld to carry Lenovo’s brand name. So, it’s a Lenovo handheld but it’s also not.
The handheld is said to be called the Lenovo G02, and it looks like a 3D-printed Game Boy but with obvious working buttons, a display, and some RGB lights around the joystick. While this handheld is made in China and was made for the Chinese market, it’s still available to obtain outside of China through online marketplaces. That widespread availability plus the illegally-loaded ROMs are a recipe for Nintendo’s ire.
