GTA 6 is one of those games that has so much hype surrounding it that people are taking risks, possibly without suspecting that they’re doing so, of installing potential malware just to have a chance to play the game early. This isn’t the first time that malware revolving around the game has become an issue. There were instances of malware and fake GTA 6 copies floating around earlier this year attempting to take advantage of people.
The main difference between then and now is that back then, there wasn’t leaked footage of the game circulating that leads people to believe there’s a playable build out there. In the week(s) leading up to the extended look at the game that dropped on Netflix recently, clips of the game being played started to surface online. It was then suspected that the leaker had a playable copy or an old playable build, and the increase in malware attempts surrounding GTA 6 seems to be exploiting that.
GTA 6 malware is being distributed as downloadable ISO files
According to security researchers at Huntress, (via TechRadar), the GTA 6 malware that’s making the rounds this time is being distributed as a downloadable ISO file. Huntress says that multiple versions of this ISO are being spread, and some of them can reach a file size of up to 100GB, with the intent to fool someone into thinking that it’s an actual playable game because it reaches the file size that a large AAA game would be.
However, the ISO only reaches that capacity because most of the data is junk data to hide the malware. Huntress mentions that many of the files in the malware are older, some from 2023, which will be more easily detected. However, Huntress also states that it’s likely some users have still been infected.
