Netflix is one of the biggest streaming platforms in the world, but even then, they’re not immune to layoffs. According to an exclusive report from The Wall Street Journal, it seems that Netflix plans to lay off as many as 1,000 employees. This would be the company’s biggest layoff since 2022.
Netflix to lay off 1,000 employees
In a company-wide email obtained by the publication, Netflix co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters were quoted as saying, “Our mission – to entertain the world – is ambitious, and delivering on it requires us to be disciplined about where we prioritize our people and resources. Our business is strong and growing, and we remain on track to deliver our full year forecast. We’ll continue to invest aggressively in high impact areas to improve our service and further drive growth and innovation.”
As it stands, Netflix has around 16,000 employees worldwide. To lay off 1,000 employees would represent about 6% of the Netflix workforce. The last time the company conducted a round of massive layoffs was in 2022, in which about 450 employees were let go. So this round of layoffs is considerably more significant.
Does this mean Netflix is in trouble?
Before you worry about what these layoffs mean for your subscription, don’t. Yes, we know that letting go of 1,000 employees sounds bad, but it doesn’t mean Netflix as a company is in trouble.
For starters, the streaming market has matured considerably. There are way more streaming services than ever before. This means that Netflix isn’t as dominant as they once were. Plus, the company has to keep investing into original TV shows and movies to try and keep its users around.
Let’s not forget that Netflix’s rivals aren’t just other streaming services like Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, or HBO Max. It is also from other free video platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, all of which are competing for the same eyeballs and time. So in the face of all of this, layoffs are to be expected.
