At the moment, Netflix still uses a carousel-like layout for its shows. This means that you scroll horizontally to look for recommendations or to continue watching shows you stopped halfway. But now, it looks like Netflix is planning on introducing a vertical feed to let you scroll through shows like you would on TikTok and Instagram.
Netflix to introduce vertical feed
According to Netflix, the company has confirmed that it plans to introduce a vertical feed later this month. Before that, Netflix did test out a vertical video feed last year. However, the latest announcement suggests that it is no longer a test and will become part of the app’s new design.
With this new vertical feed, users can scroll through and watch highlight clips of various shows and movies. The feature should help with discovery. And if you like what you see, you can tap the video to start watching the show or movie.
We can’t say we’re surprised. Like we said, platforms like Instagram and TikTok have really made the vertical feed the new standard. In fact, it’s a little ironic. Back when vertical feeds first launched, people complained. This was back in the day when you would hold your phone horizontally to watch videos.
Then, after Snapchat Stories took off, vertical feeds slowly became the new norm. Now, it’s pretty much how we all consume video content on our phones.
But that’s not all
Vertical feeds are coming, but that’s not all. Netflix has also confirmed it plans to start leveraging AI more, especially for recommendations. During the streaming company’s first quarter conference call, Netflix co-CEO Gregory Peters said, “We have been in personalization and recommendation for two decades, but we still see tremendous room to make it better by leveraging newer technologies.”
He adds, “Recommendation systems based on new model architectures not only improve current personalization but also let us iterate and improve more quickly—adding support for different content types much more efficiently.”
Co-CEO Ted Sarandos seconded that. He said, “In general, we expect GenAI to make content better: better tools, better processes […] It takes a great artist to make great art, and AI won’t change that. But AI will give those artists better tools to bring those visions to life”
