Tapping out long AI prompts on a phone screen gets tiring when you just want a quick answer. Meta is rolling out a major update to its Muse AI assistant that lets users hold real-time voice chats right inside the app. The new feature pairs spoken conversations with animated avatars that move and react as you talk.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the rollout on social media, highlighting how spoken chat helps people brainstorm without stopping to type. Under the hood, custom voice and avatar rendering engines sync lip movements and facial expressions with incoming audio. Users can interrupt the assistant at any point during a conversation, making back-and-forth exchanges feel much closer to an actual phone call.
Customizable voices for daily tasks
Meta included hundreds of distinct voice styles in the app, ranging from casual energetic tones to regional accents. The interface also gives complete visual control, letting users keep the animated avatar full-screen, docked next to text, or hidden in voice-only mode. Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang shared a live demo on X demonstrating how the digital mascot responds in real time while listening to spoken requests.
Early feedback shows people using the feature to rehearse job interviews, practice presentations, or plan trip itineraries out loud. Because the assistant processes requests in the background, users can keep chatting while making dinner or walking around their homes. That hands-free flexibility builds on the platform’s strong momentum following its initial release in September.
Wearable integration across future devices
While the voice update currently targets mobile and desktop apps, Meta plans to expand the tech into hardware soon. The company confirmed that real-time voice will arrive on Meta AI glasses and the upcoming Muse Charm device later this year. Bringing conversational tools directly to wearable devices could give users a seamless way to tackle daily tasks on the move.
The feature is currently available for US users on iOS, Android, web browsers, and Mac systems. Meta plans to expand availability to international regions after completing initial performance tests and safety checks.
