Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses come equipped with a camera, which makes it great for POV videos and recording your surroundings without having to reach for your phone. However, for privacy purposes, there’s a built-in LED indicator that lets people around you know when it’s recording. Now, Meta says that they will disable the glasses’ recording functionality if the recording LED has been tampered with.
Meta to disable smart glasses recording if LED is tampered with
The LED indicator is built into the glasses so that people know when the glasses are being used for recording. This is a standard privacy feature. But at the same time, there are probably people out there who wish to disable the LED so they can record videos sneakily. However, Meta isn’t having any of that.
According to the company, Meta says that it will disable the recording function on the glasses if the recording LED has been tampered with. The company is aware that some people are finding ways to stop the LED from showing, such as physically blocking the LED. The company says that when the glasses detect that the LED is blocked, the camera is automatically disabled.
However, they also recognize that some users might go as far as tampering with the actual hardware itself. According to Meta, “We are continuously improving our ability to detect tampering, and now we’re updating the glasses to disable the camera if they detect the LED was physically tampered with or destroyed. No other kind of camera has done this and we’re proud to lead the industry forward.”
Preventing another Google Glass incident
Meta isn’t the first to come up with the idea of smart glasses. Back in the day, Google attempted to launch something similar of their own with Google Glass. However, it was met with a lot of backlash. Not so much that the tech wasn’t good, but the fact that it allowed people to record other people in a more discreet manner.
Google Glass had its own version of the LED indicator. The first-gen model had the screen component light up when it was recording, but people still felt uncomfortable. This led to many establishments banning the device on their premises.
These days, people seem more accepting of smart glasses. If anything, Meta’s latest announcement is a good step forwards in making it even more acceptable. We’re sure there are still going to be people who are uncomfortable with being recorded. However, at least with the LED indicator, people will at least know when it’s happening.
