The MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro will actually bring desktop-level performance to smartphones, but with a significant tradeoff. Well, at least according to Digital Chat Station, one of the most prominent tipsters in the business.
MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600 Pro chip aims to bring desktop-level performance
Based on the provided information, a new CPU cluster is coming, and the target frequency of 5.00GHz. This chip is expected to utilize two high-performance cores, unlike the Dimensity 9500, which has one.
That will enable increased single-core and multi-core performance, needless to say. That will enable the aforementioned desktop-level performance, but it will cause an increase in temperature, of course.
Now, this doesn’t mean that the final product will run hot, of course. MediaTek just needs to find a way to cool this thing properly. At such high performance, a vapor chamber, that phone utilizes this chip usually ship with, may not be enough. Liquid cooling and an active fan may help.
As many of you know, desktop computers come with beefy heatsinks, which enable components to maintain peak performance and dissipate heat. Space inside smartphones is limited for something like that, of course, as they are not meant to control so much power.
TSMC’s N2P tech could help with heat control
Then there’s an elephant in the room, MediaTek’s move to TSMC’s 2nm ‘N2P’ tech, which could provide MediaTek with the needed thermal relief. So heat may not be an issue after all. It will certainly be interesting to see.
MediaTek has been making truly impressive flagship chips for a couple of years now, and it’s hard to believe that heat issues will creep in at this point. There’s plenty of experience in the company. Either way, the Dimensity 9600 Pro will be an immensely powerful chip.
