Advanced artificial intelligence features usually remain locked behind the hefty price tags of premium mobile devices. Google’s highly anticipated Gemini Intelligence platform, which promises a deeply integrated, agent-like experience on mobile hardware, recently launched with a list of system requirements so demanding that even some older premium devices cannot run it. Fortunately, MediaTek is stepping in to close that gap by launching the Dimensity 8550 chip, targeting more affordable phones with Gemini Intelligence support.
MediaTek’s Dimensity 8550 unlocks Google’s Gemini Intelligence on cheaper phones
The Dimensity 8550 processor is specifically designed to power the “flagship killer” segment of the market. On paper, the new platform shares almost identical DNA with the existing Dimensity 8500 processor. It retains the same octa-core CPU layout featuring eight high-performance Cortex-A725 cores and a Mali-G720 MC8 graphics unit. You can also expect a 4nm manufacturing process.
However, MediaTek gave the chip one key upgrade: a revised NPU 880 processor coupled with a dedicated “LLM Booster.” This specific hardware tweak adds foundational compatibility for Google’s latest Gemini Nano V3 model. Gemini Intelligence requires this specific version of the lightweight language model to handle complex agentic tasks locally. So, the inclusion of V3 support suddenly makes mid-range phones viable candidates for Google’s top-tier software.
The fine print on compatibility
Currently, hardware support for Gemini Nano V3 is an elite club. Only premium heavy hitters like the Samsung Galaxy S26 lineup, the Google Pixel 10 family, and the OnePlus 15 use it. Meanwhile, older flagships running older versions of the model are left on the sidelines for now. Adding a mid-range chip to this list changes the playing field entirely.
With that said, a compatible chip does not automatically guarantee that every future mid-range phone will get the upgrade. Google’s strict validation guidelines state that eligible hardware must also pack at least 12GB of RAM and maintain a steady cadence of core Android operating system updates.
What this means for upcoming devices
The Dimensity 8550 has already made an initial appearance in the Chinese tech sector inside variants of the Honor 600 Pro. However, the platform will likely make its way to global shores soon. Its predecessor, the Dimensity 8500, ran popular mainstream devices like the Motorola Edge 70 Pro, the global Xiaomi 17T, and the Poco X8 Pro. So, fans can expect a wave of upcoming mid-range upgrades to take advantage of this new silicon.
