Qualcomm’s pricing for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series chipset is making the rounds through rumors not long before the company heads to the annual Snapdragon Summit to reveal its newest chip offerings for future devices, and the rumors are painting an expensive picture that opens the door for MediaTek to take over some of the market share with its less expensive hardware.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chip series will come with a couple of different models according to several past rumors, including the standard version and a Pro model. By contrast, the MediaTek Dimensity 9600 series is said to have three models, which include the standard 9600s, the 9600 Pro, and the 9600 Pro Max. The 9600 Pro is supposed to be comparable to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chip, but rumors claim it will come at a significantly lower price to manufacturers.

A price of upwards of $300 per chip unit gives MediaTek an opportunity to come in and be the savior for manufacturers looking to cut costs without really cutting on too much performance. That’s because according to the pricing rumors, the MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro is said to cost around $216 per unit. That’s over $80 less than what Qualcomm is thought to be charging.
Smartphone and other mobile device makers that went with MediaTek’s option would save significant amounts of money on the bill of materials, and that would allow them to lower the final cost of those devices for consumers. In the past, Qualcomm has stayed ahead by offering more advanced chips at semi-comparable prices. This time around, MediaTek’s Pro chip is rumored to come at a considerably lower price, and that affords MediaTek the capability to swoop in and steal some market share from Qualcomm.
