MediaTek might have finally done it. According to leaked benchmarks from Geekbench 6, the new Dimensity 9600 Pro set to launch this Fall, is about 25% faster than the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, and Apple’s A19 Pro.
But, before you get too excited, keep in mind those are last year’s chips. Which are also set to get replaced this Fall, by new 2nm chips.
The Dimensity 9600 Pro is showing some pretty decent scores here, over 4,000 on the single-core and over 12,500 in the multi-core with a max clock speed of 5GHz. We’ve already written about the breakthrough TSMC made allowing these companies to surpass 5GHz now.
| Processor | Geekbench Single-Core | Geekbench Multi-Core |
|---|---|---|
| MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro | ~4,300 | ~12,500 |
| Apple A19 Pro | 3,924 | 10,070 |
| Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (for Galaxy) | 3,442 | 10,792 |
MediaTek is rumored to be using a 2+3++3 CPU cluster for the Dimensity 9600 Pro. That’s two ARM C2-Ultra cores, 3x ARM C2-Premium cores, and 3x ARM C2-Pro cores, which is similar to what Qualcomm is said to be using in the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, but of course, Qualcomm uses its own designed cores.
Dimensity 9600 Pro should launch this Fall in the OPPO Find X10 and vivo X500 series
MediaTek has been in the flagship chip game for a few years now with its Dimensity 9000 series, though there are still very few OEMs actually using these chips. It’s mostly vivo and OPPO, with Samsung using it in their ‘Ultra’ Galaxy Tab model lately.
So, we expect the Dimensity 9600 Pro to launch in the OPPO Find X10 series around the September/October time frame, as well as the vivo X500 series, because vivo will skip the X400 since the number 4 is unlucky in Chinese.
Could we see more OEMs adopt MediaTek? It’s possible. Qualcomm’s chips are quite pricey, and if MediaTek can compete with Qualcomm on performance, it’s possible we see more OEMs look their way. Especially with the rising costs for RAM and NAND storage these days. OEMs are looking at all sorts of ways to bring down prices or keep pricing steady.
