Google has started rolling out a new update to Google Home that makes it easier to access and use third-party cameras inside the app. Some third-party compatibility has always been there, but it hasn’t worked very reliably. With the latest update, the tech giant aims to fix that by improving Google Home‘s compatibility with more camera manufacturers.
Google Home gets more compatible with third-party cameras
The latest Google Home update improves the platform’s compatibility with third-party cameras. Moreover, it also adds a few handy camera features and performance fixes to make the overall experience smoother on both Android and iPhone. Once updated to the latest version, users will be able to view live security camera feeds from Eufy by Anker, Tapo by TP-Link, Wyze, Reolink, and Nanit directly in the Google Home app alongside Nest and Walmart cameras.
Some of the aforementioned brands were already compatible with Google Home in one way or the other. However, the overall experience was very inconsistent. For reference, Arlo cameras have supported live viewing for quite some time, while cameras from Reolink, Tapo, and Wyze worked only in certain situations. To fix this, Google has now expanded its app compatibility. The update should enable more reliable performance for people using different camera brands.
It also adds new camera features and performance fixes
As said earlier, the new Google Home update also improves performance and overall user experience of the app and adds certain new features. It adds a new “Save Clip” button that makes it easier for the user to download event recordings from Nest and Walmart cameras. Moreover, premium subscribers will also be able to generate AI summaries of camera events. Google has also changed the default camera view so users can jump straight to recent events or their timeline.
Further, there are some smaller improvements as well. If the user turns their smartphone sideways, the feed will automatically expand to full-screen. Nest cameras will now be able to stream videos for longer without any major interruptions.
Last but not least, Google has also improved scrolling through camera feeds, fixed camera history issues on iPhones, and corrected battery status indicators. It has also resolved a Samsung-specific issue where camera audio was using call volume instead of media volume.
