Auto shows give visitors a chance to check out new cars, explore their interiors, and experience the latest technology up close. At the 2026 Paris Motor Show, though, one young visitor apparently got a little too hands-on. A child inside a display Mercedes-Benz VLE reportedly managed to start the electric van and engage reverse, sending it into a wall while a product specialist tried to stop it. The incident was captured on video and circulated on social media, turning a routine vehicle display into an unexpectedly chaotic moment.

The VLE Reversed Into The Show Stand’s Backdrop
The incident reportedly took place on October 17, during the final days of the show at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. In the circulating clip, the bronze-colored VLE moves backward into the display backdrop despite a staff member’s attempt to intervene. The impact appears to damage the wall, while the children climb out and are approached by security. Their ages and what happened afterward have not been confirmed, and there is no verified estimate of the damage to the $130,000 vehicle itself.

It also remains unclear how the child managed to activate the van and put it into reverse. There is no confirmation that the vehicle was left unlocked or that its key was accessible, so it would be premature to say it was a security lapse. Still, the scenario is a reminder that interactive displays need careful supervision, particularly when visitors can access a vehicle’s controls.
Mercedes’ Electric Van Is Packed With Luxury Tech
The VLE is no ordinary people carrier. Mercedes-Benz is positioning it as a premium electric passenger vehicle, with seating for up to eight and a cabin that can be configured around comfort and entertainment. Available technology includes the MBUX Superscreen dashboard and a 31.3-inch panoramic display that folds down from the headliner for rear passengers.

The entry-level VLE 300 uses a single electric motor producing 272 horsepower, while the all-wheel-drive VLE 400 4Matic gets two motors and 409 hp. Both versions use a 115-kWh battery, and Mercedes quotes a WLTP range of more than 435 miles for the VLE 300. The model is expected to reach the U.S. for the 2028 model year. For now, the Paris mishap is a rather less glamorous way for the new electric van to make headlines.
