U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy and Amtrak have selected Penn Transformation Partners, a joint venture of Halmar and Skanska, as the private master developer team to lead the transformation of New York Penn Station. The current timeline calls for groundbreaking to occur before the end of 2027.
Under the Halmar/Skanska proposal, redevelopment of the station won’t entail relocating Madison Square Garden. The plan calls for constructing a grand entrance on Eighth Avenue, replacing cramped walkways with open concourses, adding track capacity and improving the station’s existing subterranean structure.
“Not only is the winning redesign for New York Penn Station beautiful, but the changes to the station will more importantly increase the capacity of what is already America’s busiest transit hub, allowing commuters and visitors alike to reach their destinations more easily,” said Deputy U. S. Transportation Secretary Steve Bradbury. USDOT and Amtrak assumed control of the project last year.
