The 1993-1998 model years were the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s first as the ZJ generation, and it was initially slated to replace both the SJ Jeep Wagoneer and the smaller XJ Cherokee, yet ended up becoming a separate nameplate in its own right. After a successful run of seven model years, the redesign of the Jeep Grand Cherokee was codenamed the WJ and launched in 1998 with fresh new engines and a bigger body, running for six years before it was replaced with the WK for 2005, which launched with the new Hemi V8 engine but was criticized for taking a step back in quality with many hard cabin plastics. The longest-running Grand Cherokee of all was the WK2, which went on sale in 2010.
