In somewhat surprising news, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 could be Samsung’s last clamshell foldable phone. This is according to leaker @fireuniverse8 on X, who claims that it’ll be the final flip phone for Samsung, and the company plans to focus more on the Galaxy Z Fold series moving forward. Which does make a bit of sense, seeing as we’re getting two Galaxy Z Fold models this year.
However, it is important to note that the user does say “might be the last”, so there’s still a chance we could see a Galaxy Z Flip 9 next year. They also mention that it’ll use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, which is not a surprise and was also leaked a few weeks ago.
This is a newer account, so we don’t know how good (or bad) their track record is. However, looking at how much time Samsung has spent on the Flip at the last few Unpacked events, versus the Fold, it does seem likely to be true.
The Android Headlines Take
From the numbers that we have seen, regarding foldables, the Flip-style phones have been mostly a dud for everyone that isn’t Motorola. Surprisingly, Motorola has had huge success with its flip phone, the Razr over the past few years. A big reason for this is the nostalgia play that they’re using, as well as the price points. You can sometimes get a Razr for as low as $500. That’s not true for the Galaxy Z Flip series. Even the cheaper Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE from last year was still around $800, and didn’t go on sale all that often.
While this would be a pretty big move for Samsung, it does make sense. It’s a product that’s not working for them, so why should they keep investing time and money in it? Especially when the Galaxy Z Fold is much more popular. This could also be setting up for multiple Galaxy Z Fold models in the future, instead of just the Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra.
