If you’re thinking of picking up an iPhone this year and one that has the largest battery capacity, you might want to skip the foldable iPhone Ultra. This is because, according to the latest details, the iPhone Ultra will feature a dual-battery configuration. But even then, it will be less than the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
iPhone Ultra to sport dual battery configuration
A post on Weibo by tipster Digital Chat Station claims the iPhone Ultra will use a dual battery configuration. Now, this isn’t exactly revolutionary or new. Many book-style foldables feature a similar setup. It makes sense because otherwise one side would be thicker than the other and it would be off-balance.
However, Digital Chat Station shared the battery details, suggesting that one half will sport a 1,921mAh battery. The other half uses a 2,962mAh battery. This gives the iPhone Ultra a total combined battery size of 4,883mAh.
For a bit of context, the latest rumors suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro Max might pack a larger battery. In an earlier post, the leaks suggest the iPhone 18 Pro Max could feature a 5,235mAh battery in Europe and a 5,425mAh battery in the US, where it will be sold as an eSIM-only model. Either way, both configurations offer a larger battery.
A bit worrying
This is both interesting and worrying. The iPhone Ultra essentially features dual displays. One on the front and one on the inside. This means the phone’s battery is being used to power both displays, with presumably the larger display taking up more juice. So for it to pack a smaller battery has us wondering about overall battery life.
However, note that the iPhone Ultra will most likely use the new Apple A20 Pro chipset built on the 2nm process. By right, this should offer up improved efficiency. But whether or not it translates to any meaningful battery life remains to be seen. Apple will reportedly debut the iPhone Ultra this September.
The company is seemingly optimistic, with reported plans to ship as many as 10 million units. However, the latest rumors suggest that Apple’s initial batch could be supply-constrained, meaning it could be hard to get your hands on one on launch day.
