If you own any of Apple’s iOS products, including the iPhone and iPad, you might want to download the latest update ASAP, especially if you haven’t updated to iOS 27 yet. This is because the latest iOS 26.7.1 patch addresses an Apple CoreGraphics flaw that was exploited in “extremely sophisticated” targeted attacks on iOS devices.
Apple patches CoreGraphics flaw in latest update
On September 28, Apple released iOS 26.7.1 and iPadOS 26.7.1. The Apple CoreGraphics is the part of Apple’s software that draws images and documents on your screen, and CVE-2026-86950 is the flaw Apple fixed in it. According to Meta Product Security, the flaw is essentially a booby-trapped file that can trick it into writing data where it shouldn’t. That lets an attacker run their own code on the device.
According to Apple, “Processing a maliciously crafted file may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals on versions of iOS before iOS 27.”
The update will cover various iPhones and iPads. Based on Apple’s support page, it covers the iPhone 11 and later, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 3rd generation and later, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation and later, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 8th generation and later, and iPad mini 5th generation and later. It also covers Macs running macOS Sequoia 15.8.1 and Tahoe 26.7.1.
Why does this matter?
A hacker who can run code on your phone has plenty of options. For example, they can dig through your photos and emails. In the past, we’ve also seen iPhone attacks empty out crypto wallets. Apple hasn’t said what these attackers actually did, but it is possible it is part of a targeted spyware campaign.
In any case, the fix is publicly available now. If you’re ready to update, just open Settings, tap General, then tap Software Update. If you’re staying on iOS 26 for now, download the iOS 26.7.1 update. Alternatively, you can update to iOS 27. Based on Apple’s wording and multiple reports, it suggests that devices running iOS 27 aren’t affected.
Plus, iOS 27 introduces a revamped Apple Intelligence and Siri and other improvements. So it could be worth updating while keeping your device secure at the same time.
