iOS 27 was announced at WWDC 2026 and based on Apple’s typical release schedule, we can probably expect it to be released later this month. Apple touched on several features that are part of iOS 27, but one that they sort of glossed over is the iPhone Handoff feature. But now, we have a better idea of what to expect.
Here’s how the iPhone Handoff feature works
In a post on the MacRumors forum by user pdfu, they shared a video on how the iPhone Handoff feature works. The setup process seems quite straightforward. You basically enable it in the Settings app under the Cellular section. After that, you choose which iPhone you want to be the main device and which is the companion device.
The main iPhone will continue using the main eSIM, while the other device gets a companion eSIM. This allows users to switch back and forth between iPhones while keeping the same number. The main cellular settings are managed via the main iPhone. Location sharing is also based on which iPhone is being actively used.
However, one thing to note is that it seems iPhone Handoff requires carrier support. This means depending on your carrier, you may or may not be able to use this feature. So far, T-Mobile in the US and Deutsche Telekom in Germany are the only carriers listed that will support the feature at launch. Presumably more will follow at a later date.
Why would you want to use this?
That is a good question, and there are several potential use case scenarios. For instance, you might have one iPhone for work and one for personal use. Your work iPhone contains email and productivity apps related to work, while your personal iPhone has social media apps.Â
In the past, you would probably get two different numbers. But with iPhone Handoff, you won’t have to, which could possibly save you some money. Plus, it makes it easier for you to be reached. You might also find use for it while traveling. If you don’t want to carry around your newer and more expensive iPhone, you can use iPhone Handoff on an older and less expensive iPhone.
Lastly, it might be useful for keeping yourself from being distracted. One device can be your main device, and the other is a stripped down version without social media or communication apps.
