The iPhone Duo was officially released last week and there were a barrage of reviews, opinions, and thoughts on the device. However, it did not take long before we started coming across reports of the iPhone Duo display breaking in mere hours after some users got their hands on it.
iPhone Duo displays are breaking
According to multiple posts across social media, users are reporting that their iPhone Duo displays are breaking within hours of them getting it. Now, seeing the occasional defect is normal, especially when companies like Apple are churning out millions of these devices. But what’s interesting is how they all seem to be breaking at the exact same location.
Based on all the photos, it seems that there could be some kind of defect with the hinge. Because of this defect, it is causing the displays of some units to crack at the exact same spot.
This might have been confirmed by Korean YouTuber CuriousHagi. During his teardown of the iPhone Duo, he took a look at the design of the hinge. The hinge itself is an engineering feat and appears to be rather complex. But it seems this complexity could be the cause of the problem. This is due to a gear-like design featuring different types of linking hinges.
Like we said, pretty much all the damaged iPhone Duo displays we’ve seen have broken in the same place. Based on CuriousHagi’s teardown, it is believed that one of the links could have broken off, causing it to pop off and cracking the display when it is folded.
Apple hasn’t confirmed anything yet
That being said, we can’t say for sure if CuriousHagi’s findings are accurate. Apple themselves have yet to publicly acknowledge the issue. Plus, we can’t be 100% certain how widespread this issue is. After all, if your brand new $2,000 iPhone breaks, you’re more likely to post about it, rather than a phone that works just fine.
There are varying responses across social media. Some users claim that Apple was quick to replace the broken units. Others have had less luck. In one instance, one customer was told that it was their fault and they should have bought insurance. Either way, it’s not a good look for Apple.
