Apple has changed up the iPhone’s design over the years. With the iPhone 15, Apple adopted the use of titanium. That lasted about two generations before the company swapped back to aluminum. Now, the latest rumors suggest that for the iPhone 20, Apple could ditch aluminum for glass.
iPhone 20 could feature glass design
This is according to a post on Weibo by tipster Fixed Focus Digital. According to their post, the iPhone 20 will ditch aluminum for glass. However, it should be noted that they are referring to the 2027 iPhone. Yes, we know that based on Apple’s naming scheme, next year’s iPhone should be called the iPhone 19.
However, did you know that 2027 actually marks the 20th anniversary of the iPhone? That is why Apple is planning a huge shake up in terms of design, and why they might be opting for a different name. We’ve seen this happen with the iPhone X, which skipped the iPhone 9. So this move isn’t entirely without precedent.
This is also not the first time we’ve heard rumors that the 2027 iPhone will be made out of mostly glass and metal. There are rumors that it could also feature curved edges, dropping the flat edges that we’ve been seeing in the past few iPhone generations. This could potentially be the biggest change in iPhone design since the iPhone X, but given that it’ll be the 20th anniversary, it makes sense.
Has Apple been hinting all this while?
That being said, Apple might have been hinting at this change. If you recall, iOS 26 came with a massive redesign to the UI. Apple went with a design language they called Liquid Glass, which features a glass-like looking UI. Some speculate that this could have been Apple getting ready for its glass iPhone.
We can’t say for sure if that’s the case, but mounting evidence all seems to suggest that’s where the company is headed. In any case, the 2027 iPhone launch is still quite a long ways to go. This means that plans can always change or be cancelled. Either way, take it with a grain of salt for now.
In the meantime, Apple is expected to debut its next-gen iPhones this September. They are also expected to launch its first-ever foldable iPhone with the iPhone Ultra.
