It’s happening, it seems. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be getting variable aperture. According to a new report by ETNews, Apple has begun ramping up its supply chain.
Components for the iPhone 18 Pro’s variable aperture are on the way
Based on the report, which cites industry sources, a Chinese supplier, Sunny Optical, has started producing the actuators that enable the aperture mechanism. Camera module assembly will follow in early summer.
Apple’s main camera partner, LG Innotek, will begin production around June or July, as the phones are expected to launch in September, per course for Apple’s iPhones.
This will be the first time ever that Apple will use a variable aperture camera in an iPhone. We’ve seen it used in a number of other smartphones, but not in a single iPhone.
The iPhone 18 Pro series will become the first to use variable aperture… as far as iPhones are concerned
Apple has been using the same aperture from the iPhone 14 Pro through the iPhone 17 Pro, a fixed f/1.78 aperture. That essentially means that the lens remains fully open when capturing images. That changes with variable aperture, depending on the scene and the amount of light in it.
This is not the first time we’re hearing about variable aperture on iPhones, though. Back in December 2024, Ming-Chi Kuo, an Apple supply chain analyst, said that the main camera on both iPhone 18 Pro models will offer variable aperture. So long before any other reports.
As a reminder, Apple is expected to announce three iPhones in September. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are coming, alongside the company’s first foldable. That device could be called the iPhone Ultra.
What about the iPhone 18, you may ask? Well, that one won’t arrive until 2027, based on reports. The same goes for the iPhone 18e, in case you were wondering.
