The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are now official alongside the brand’s first foldable, dubbed the iPhone Duo. There are a handful of hardware upgrades, including the new A20 Pro 2nm chipset, a new variable camera system, improved battery performance, and on-device AI capabilities. While the design is largely identical to its predecessors, the iPhone 18 Pro series’ Dynamic Island is now smaller.
iPhone 18 Pro’s smaller Dynamic Island supports up to three Live Activities
A smaller Dynamic Island means less screen obstruction, giving users more display area for gaming, content consumption, and more. This is definitely a welcome design improvement, but there’s more. Apple, in its press release, notes that, using advanced display technology, the Dynamic Island is redesigned to create room for additional information. The smaller Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro series now supports up to three simultaneous Live Activities.
So, the change isn’t just about design; it also brings some practical benefits. The Dynamic Island currently only supports a maximum of two simultaneous Live Activities. Apple has shown how three Live Activity displays can appear (video below) on the Dynamic Island at the same time.
Toggle between activities
Though it takes up some portion of the screen, it can be a useful addition, making it more practical for keeping track of multiple ongoing activities at once. That said, the design change wasn’t entirely a surprise, though. Ahead of the event, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said the redesigned Dynamic Island would be “smaller and improved.” He also claimed it would let users toggle between up to three Live Activities.
This might not sound like a big addition on paper, but it adds to the overall multitasking experience for users. Despite the smaller size, the iPhone 18 Pro continues to feature Face ID for secure unlocking of the device, app purchases, and other use cases. As a refresher, Dynamic Island debuted with the iPhone 14 Pro way back in 2022. It turned the front-facing camera and Face ID section into something more useful.
