One of the more exciting things to look forward to in the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max is the use of the A20 Pro chipset. This is because this will be the first 2nm chip to be used in the iPhone. However, the latest leaks suggest that the 2nm A20 Pro chip might only make the iPhone 18 Pro 18% faster.
iPhone 18 Pro chip will be faster, but not by much
Now, going from 3nm to 2nm is a bigger deal than most people realize. Being able to fit more transistors on a single chip will not only boost performance, but also power efficiency. But those are theoretical gains. The exact improvements still remain to be seen. However, a post on Weibo by tipster Fixed Focus Digital suggests the new chip might not make the iPhone 18 Pro that much faster.
According to the leak, the A20 Pro might only see a performance improvement of about 18% over its predecessor. Honestly, that’s not that impressive. This means that if you were hoping for a night and day performance improvement over the A19 Pro, you could end up being disappointed.
This isn’t to say this is a useless upgrade. If you’re coming from the iPhone 16 Pro series or older, then maybe the difference in performance will be more obvious. But for those coming from the iPhone 17 series, less so. However, these aren’t the official numbers yet. We’ll have to wait for the phones to be released and for actual benchmarks to get a better idea. Either way, we’re sure Apple is going to spin in a way that sounds more grand.
But don’t worry, there are still improvements
So, while performance improvements might be hovering around 18%, the energy efficiency improvements look more optimistic. The leak suggests that power consumption reduction of the A20 Pro is around 30%. Combine this with the rumored battery upgrades, this could actually be an upgrade users can feel in their day-to-day usage.
That being said, it’s worth noting that the A20 Pro is rumored to only be for the Pro models. The base iPhone 18, which is coming in 2027, might use the regular A20. We don’t know what the differences are yet, so we’ll have to wait and see. Until then, take these leaks with a grain of salt, although the wait isn’t too far behind.Â
The iPhone 18 Pro series is currently rumored for a September launch. It is expected to debut alongside Apple’s first-ever foldable, the iPhone Ultra.
