Apple usually does not promise a specific software support period for the iPhones. The device’s end-of-life status is only confirmed when the company tags a specific iOS version as its last major update. Now, a new leak claims the upcoming iOS 27 update will drop official software support for four iPhone models.
iOS 27 leak reveals four iPhone models may drop support soon
Popular tipster Instant Digital on Weibo has claimed that iOS 27 compatibility includes support for the latest hardware. This could potentially mean several old iPhones will officially lose their software support status. As per the information, devices such as the iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11, and iPhone SE (2nd generation) may lose support. If the leak turns out to be accurate, only iPhone 12 series and onward models will be eligible for the latest iOS 27.
Back with the release of iOS 26, Apple dropped support for the iPhone XS series. Seems like the list of incompatible models is going to be bigger with the iOS 27 update. The Cupertino tech giant is slowly dropping support for old-gen iPhones as it introduces several new AI-powered features in the software that require powerful and the latest hardware. These legacy models have had an impressive run. Therefore, their exclusion from the software support is not necessarily an unexpected move.
iOS 27 requires the latest hardware, and hence, legacy models are not eligible
Several features of the upcoming iOS 27 have already leaked online. And it certainly explains why Apple is dropping support for older iPhones. Recent reports suggest the company’s digital assistant, Siri, is set to get a major redesign. It is said to feature the latest Liquid Glass-inspired aesthetics. Since it combines the latest AI features and the demanding Liquid Glass interface, powerful hardware is a non-negotiable requirement.
Ultimately, it’s a trade-off. While we hate to see older iPhones lose support, it’s often better to have a smooth day-to-day experience on a slightly older OS than a stuttering mess on the latest one. iOS 26 and its demanding Liquid Glass design were already popular for messing with the software experience of older iPhones. Seems like Apple does not want to repeat the same story.
