- I didn’t expect my staycation to feel like an ocean away.

When I sent my mom a selfie from Mohonk Mountain House, she thought I was in Europe. I was about 90 miles from my New York City apartment.
In the summer of 2026, I was craving a break from the city, but like many Americans, I wanted to avoid the rising costs and chaos of air travel, so I took a staycation and traveled locally.
I scoured the internet for nearby NYC escapes and found what seemed like the perfect spot — Mohonk Mountain House, an all-inclusive resort in New York’s Shawangunk Mountains that looked like a European castle.
I booked a two-night stay at Mohonk Mountain House. My room had a starting rate of $1,400 a night for double occupancy, though Business Insider received a media rate.
My booking included all meals and most activities at the resort. Some things cost extra, like alcohol, room service, and snacks.
From the architecture to the interiors, Mohonk Mountain House made me feel as if I’d flown across the Atlantic. I never imagined I could feel so far away while being so close to home.
