Huawei is all set to unveil its next Mate series of flagship smartphones in a few days. The company could launch as many as three new devices. These could include the Mate 90, Mate 90 Pro, and Mate 90 Pro Max. The first two models will be standard offerings with minor changes. However, recent leaks indicate that the Huawei Mate 90 Pro will be the star of the show, featuring full-size external camera support.
Huawei’s Mate 90 Pro Max could arrive with an external DSLR-style camera add-on
According to the Chinese gadget leaker Ice Universe, the Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max model will support an external camera. The tipster emphasized that this will be a true external camera, not a traditional external lens or a telephoto attachment. This will be an independent one-inch sensor and can attach to the rear of the phone.
Additionally, the source claims that the camera will offer a continuous zoom range from 24mm to 240mm. It works out to native 1x through 10x zoom. The brand has paired it with a variable aperture ranging from f/2.0 to f/4.5. The add-on will be able to handle multiple focal lengths of its own, instead of simply magnifying the handset’s telephoto shooter.
Huawei is taking a different approach than regular telephoto add-ons
It’s worth mentioning that Huawei’s approach to an external camera is that the accessory has its own sensor. Regular telephoto extender lenses do not have this approach. These ones usually sit over a device’s existing camera to boost a native zoom level. However, with Huawei’s external camera, you could reportedly capture from 1x to higher zoom levels without the requirement of the phone’s own camera.
Huawei could offer this external camera with the Mate 90 Pro Max Special Edition. We will find out more on October 1st, when Huawei will reveal the new Mate 90 series in China.
