Just a few days ago, leaked renders showed us what the upcoming Huawei Mate 90 series could look like. Well, the good news is that we won’t have to wait much longer as Huawei has officially announced its latest flagship phone lineup that comes in five different variations.
Huawei unveils the Mate 90, Mate 90 Pro, Mate 90 Pro Max
There are five models in this lineup. This includes the base Huawei Mate 90, the Mate 90 Pro, and the Mate 90 Pro Max. Then there is also the Mate 90 Pro Max Collector’s Edition and Mate 90 RS Ultimate Design.
Now, they’re not just different in terms of size and design. There are differences under the hood too. For instance, the base model features the use of Huawei’s Kirin 9030 chipset, while the Pro model sports the Kirin 9035. However, the remaining three models feature Huawei’s LogicFolding Kirin 9050 Pro chipset, which is the company’s answer to fitting more transistors onto the same footprint.
The Huawei Mate 90 and Mate 90 Pro both have 6.75-inch screens and 6,600mAh batteries. The other three step up to a 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED with a 1 to 120Hz refresh rate. Huawei says it reaches 12,000 nits of local peak brightness. Those models also get a 6,800mAh battery with 100W wired and 50W wireless charging. That’s a sizable improvement from the 6,000mAh battery in last year’s Mate 80 Pro Max.
The Pro Max has a 50MP main camera with a variable aperture, a 40MP ultrawide, and a 200MP periscope telephoto. All five run HarmonyOS 7. Like past Huawei phones, they skip Google apps.
Pricing starts at 5,999 yuan, or about $894. Huawei hasn’t announced global availability, although we don’t really expect them to.
Ruiying Z10 external camera

In addition to the new phones, Huawei also took the wraps off the Ruiying Z10. Huawei says it works with the Mate 90 Pro Max Collector’s Edition and the Mate 90 RS Ultimate Design.
However, this isn’t a simple clip-on lens. The Z10 is essentially a camera with its own 1-inch, 50MP sensor. It attaches around the phone’s camera bump. Huawei says it handles its own image processing and storage too.
It offers 10x continuous optical zoom, covering a 24 to 240mm range with an f/2.0 to f/4.5 aperture. It sounds like overkill for a phone, but it’s far beyond a typical phone telephoto. We imagine some photographers might appreciate and find use for it.
The Z10 costs 5,999 yuan on its own, about $900. A full Pro Camera Kit with extra attachments runs 19,499 yuan, or about $2,910. That’s more expensive than the Mate 90 itself.
