It seems like Android and iOS will get some serious competition moving forward, as Huawei has just revealed its plan for HarmonyOS’ expansion to global markets.
As many of you know, HarmonyOS has been in use across Huawei devices in China and on the company’s smartwatches globally. However, the company’s phones still come with EMUI on top of Android.
Huawei is planning to compete with Android and iOS worldwide, thanks to HarmonyOS
Huawei’s goal is to push HarmonyOS as a new OS to its global devices, as it has been running on the company’s smartphones in China for quite some time now. It’s actually called teh HarmonyOS NEXT in China.
Well, during a roundtable discussion with the media, Huawei revealed its aim to bring its OS to global markets. Richard Yu, a Director of Huawei Consumer Business and the Executive Director at Huawei, said that the company is looking forward to expanding its OS to markets outside of China.
He did, however, say that this plan will take time. “We are considering gradually bringing HarmonyOS to the global market in the future. That’s just our initial plan, though. We will do that slowly, step by step.”
HarmonyOS helped Huawei expand its supply chain in China and ditch US tech products. As a reminder, Android-free HarmonyOS NEXT came to the scene back in 2024.
HarmonyOS ecosystem grew immensely over the years
It is worth saying that Huawei’s HarmonyOS ecosystem now has over 90 million devices, 450,000 apps and services, 11 million developers, and 23,000 app innovation partners.
Richard Yu added: “Developing an operating system is no easy task. There were previous attempts by other brands like Windows Phone from Microsoft, the bada OS from Samsung, and Symbian from Nokia. They were not successful. Even though we did it many years later, we have succeeded. I think this is certainly incredibly difficult to achieve.”
So we did not get an exact timeline on all of this, but it seems like Huawei is getting ready to ditch Android on global devices as well… at some point.
