HONOR Magic9 Pro Max Is Official, and It Brings ARRI’s Camera Expertise

HONOR has just announced its new flagship smartphone, the Magic9 Pro Max. This phone comes as a result of a partnership with ARRI, a well-known camera company.

Do note that the phone was launched in China; this is its initial launch. The device will, however, make its way to the global market at some point in the future. We hopefully won’t have to wait for long.

The HONOR Magic9 Pro Max is official with ARRI’s partnership

Before we get down to specifics, let’s talk about the ARRI partnership first. The new camera island on the phone is inspired by ARRI. It draws inspiration from the “three-lens turret” design, which was first introduced back in 1937.

ARRI is also playing a notable part in the camera itself. It enables the phone to shoot in ARRI LogC3, and there are also 14 preset ARRI Look LUTs here. You’ll also get access to ARRI’s wider library of official and third-party LUTs, and support for the APV 10-bit 4:2:2 codec.

The phone has a flat display with a pill-shaped cutout on the front. The bezels are uniform and quite thin. The sides of the phone are flat, and so is its backplate. Well, aside from the camera island, of course.

It has an interesting camera plateau on the back, inspired by ARRI’s cameras

There is a camera plateau at the top of the phone’s back side, with three cameras protruding from there. Most of the physical buttons are on the right side, but there’s also an action button on the left.

Let’s delve more into the cameras, though, aside from the ARRI portion we’ve mentioned. The main camera is a 200-megapixel unit with an f/1.57 aperture and a 1/1.28-inch sensor size. OIS is included here, and we’re looking at 3-degree gimbal-level stabilization here. Speaking of OIS, this phone has CIPA 8.0 standard on both the main and periscope telephoto cameras.

Speaking of the periscope telephoto unit, that one is also a 200-megapixel unit. It has an f/2.6 aperture and a 1/1.4-inch sensor size. OIS is included here as well, along with the aforementioned CIPA 8.0 standard.

The third camera is a 50-megapixel ultrawide unit with an f/2.0 aperture. On the front, you’ll find a 55-megapixel selfie snapper (f/2.0 aperture), along with a 3D depth-sensing camera.

Qualcomm’s most powerful chip fuels the device

The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor. That chip is backed by 12GB or 16GB of RAM, depending on the model you choose. The storage goes up to 1TB.

A 6.8-inch LTPO OLED panel sits on the front, and it has an anti-reflective coating. HONOR’s anti-scratch NanoCrystal Shield glass protects the panel. The refresh rate goes up to 120Hz. This display also offers 4,320Hz PWM dimming, and it has a peak brightness of 2,000 nits. The resolution is 2868 x 1320 pixels.

An 8,800mAh battery is also a part of the package, and it has 40% silicone content on the inside. 100W wired charging is also supported, along with 80W wireless charging.

The phone also has excellent ingress protection

The phone is IP68, IP69, and IP69K certified for excellent ingress protection. It also has the SGS 5-Star Scratch Resistance Certification. Bluetooth 6.3 is supported, as is Wi-Fi 7. Android 17 comes pre-installed, along with MagicOS 11.

HONOR also includes stereo speakers here. In fact, you’re getting dual 1216 speakers on the inside, which should be able to beat the vast majority of speakers on flagship phones, if not all of them.

The HONOR Magic9 Pro Max comes in Glacier Silver, Shadow Black, and Moss Green colors. The phone measures 161.64 x 76.98 x 8.59mm, while it weighs 233 grams.
