Honda Just Made The Prelude More Exclusive Without Making It Faster

Honda is giving the revived Prelude a dose of exclusivity in Japan with a new special edition, aptly named the 2027 Limited Edition. The newcomer retains the coupe’s sleek styling and hybrid powertrain but adds a more distinctive finish inside and out. It’s set to arrive at Japanese dealerships in August, less than a year after the Prelude returned to its home market.

A Red-Themed Take On The Prelude

The most noticeable change is the introduction of a new Premium Crystal Garnet Metallic paint finish, giving the coupe a richer and more premium look than the standard model. Honda has paired the deep red exterior with matching trim pieces, while red accents replace the blue details found on regular versions. The Limited Edition also retains the Prelude’s 19-inch black alloy wheels and red Brembo brake calipers. Inside, the red theme continues with Bordeaux-coloured accents across the front seats, dashboard, and centre console, and some red stitching.

No Extra Performance On Offer

While the styling package may be new, the mechanical package remains unchanged. The Prelude continues to use Honda’s 2.0-litre hybrid powertrain, producing 200 hp and sending power to the front wheels through the brand’s S+ Shift system, which simulates gear changes. Those hoping for a more focused performance variant may be disappointed. Honda executives have previously suggested that developing a turbocharged or manual-transmission Prelude would be difficult to justify financially, making the chances of a future Prelude Type R appear increasingly slim.

Prelude Demand In Japan

Price remains one of the Prelude’s most debated topics. In the United States, the coupe has a starting MSRP of $42,000, leading many enthusiasts to argue that Honda has positioned it too close to more powerful alternatives, like the Civic Type R. That said, demand has proven stronger than many expected. Sales in Japan reportedly exceeded expectations at the model’s launch, while the United States recorded its strongest month of Prelude sales yet in April. The new Limited Edition will cost ¥6,306,300 ($39,150) in Japan, just ¥126,500 ($785) over the standard model. Honda has yet to confirm whether this red-themed special edition will be offered in other markets, leaving overseas buyers waiting for further details.
