To create the first mobile chipset capable of 5 GHz clock speeds, Qualcomm had to introduce “Flex Cache”. According to Qualcomm, this is a new architecture that allows dynamic allocation of the cache pool, giving prime cores access to nearly the entire pool for demanding single-threaded tasks like gaming or multitasking. At the same time, it’s streamlining inter-core handoffs crucial to agentic AI’s multi-step workflows.
Flex Cache has a Unified Pool that replaces the previous design, where different core types had separate caches, instead providing heterogeneous access to a single, unified cache pool. Previously, Qualcomm used two different core types, each with its own cache. But now, with a single cache pool, handoffs between different core types are more seamless, which is really important for new-age workloads. For example, agentic workloads with multi-step operations and multiple workload levels require the CPU to orchestrate between the NPU and GPU.
Flex Cache is also going to help with heavy gaming
This new cache will also make a difference with gaming. Qualcomm says that with heavy gaming, “we’re starting to see the trends of high-resolution gaming to support that level of gaming experiences.” So, along with the gaming AI, it’s important for Qualcomm to use this heterogeneous access to minimize handoffs between cores and keep compute fast and efficient.
It can also dynamically allocate the cache pool based on workload needs. Obviously, some tasks will need more cache than others. Qualcomm says that this “dynamic approach delivers exceptional performance in demanding single-threaded workloads such as gaming, video editing, or multitasking.”
Finally, by keeping data closer to the processor and minimizing inter-core handoffs, it reduces DDR fetches and keeps compute fast and efficient. Providing the end-user with a fast and efficient experience when using a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 or Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6-powered device.
