Automakers, like most businesses, have the goal of maximizing profits and returns to shareholders – which is pretty much anathema to over-engineered engines and the niche models such powertrains usually end up in. However, sometimes genuine car guys and gals rise to the top, and we get wild projects like Mercedes-AMG dropping a championship-winning Formula 1 engine into the One hypercar, or Bugatti developing a V16 engine from scratch for the Tourbillon, which enters production in 2026 under increasingly strict emissions regulations.
