Back in January, Google agreed to pay damages following illegal data collection. Back then, Google said it didn’t illegally collect data, but it decided to settle regardless, to minimize the damage.
The result of that settlement is a $135 million payout to Android users. That could lead up to $100 for every user who was impacted. That’s not a ground-breaking amount, but it’s free cash that affected users can collect.
Google’s $135 million payout is now open for eligible users in the US
With that being said, the time has come for you to collect. You can now claim your share of $135 million, as the portal for the Taylor vs Google settlement is now open. Eligible users will get a payment option form (PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, ACH, or virtual MasterCard).
This settlement actually covers the vast majority of Android users in the US from November 12, 2017. If you owned an Android device in the mentioned period, you’re eligible to claim your share. So, if you owned an Android device in the US from November 12, 2017, until the court’s final approval for this settlement, you’re good to go. There is one exception, though. If you’re already part of the Csupo case in California, you’re not included in this settlement.
Chances are you won’t even need to fill out a traditional claim form. Instead, you will receive a payment election form to choose how you want to get paid, as mentioned earlier.
You could end up receiving up to $100
Now, we’ve mentioned $100 per person. Do note that the mentioned amount is the absolute maximum you could receive; it’s not a guarantee, it could be less than that. The final amount will depend on how many people are eligible and the net fund after legal fees.
Just to be perfectly clear, this entire case revolves around claims that Android devices sent cellular data to Google even when phones were idle. They did all that without users knowing about it. Needless to say, that raised privacy and extra data usage concerns.
This is not the first such settlement case Google has been involved in in the last couple of years. There’s the lawsuit revolving around Google Assistant, where Google decided to settle for $68 million. There’s also a settlement with Epic Games.
