Earlier this year, Google teased a new series of laptops called the Googlebook. We don’t really know what this new OS will look like, short of a few teaser images and hints here and there. But we might have a better idea now, thanks to the Googlebook Desktop Camera app on the Play Store, which gives us a glimpse into what the design language could be.
Googlebook Desktop Camera app spotted on Play Store
In the Play Store listing, the Googlebook Desktop Camera app shows us what kind of design language Google is pursuing. According to the app’s description, “Capture every moment clearly with the official Camera app. Built for larger screens, tablets, and desktops, it offers a simple and intuitive experience, whether you’re using touch, a mouse, or a keyboard.”
Google also says the app has been designed with larger screens in min. It will also work across touch input or traditional keyboard or mouse. This is actually reminiscent of the rumors of Apple’s touch-enabled MacBook Pro. The rumored laptop is said to feature a version of macOS that can adapt to touch or traditional input devices.
What’s interesting is that according to 9to5Google, the design of the app isn’t too different from the Pixel Camera on the Pixel Tablet. However, given that Googlebooks are running a new platform that is essentially a combination of Android and ChromeOS, this isn’t too surprising.
The app will also support external webcams, so you don’t have to use the laptop’s built-in webcam if you don’t want to. There’s also support for QR code scanning and smart document scanning. All of this is already making Googlebook sound rather interesting.
Who’s making Googlebooks?
As it stands, there are at least three computer makers that will launch Googlebook devices. This includes Acer, ASUS, and Lenovo. Google initially unveiled the platform at I/O 2026 earlier this year. However, the actual release of the hardware is expected to arrive this fall. We don’t know how much these Googlebooks will cost compared to Chromebooks.
But what we do know is that it will have better native Android app support. This will be useful for Google to help establish the ecosystem. It is also designed to be Gemini-focused, so expect a lot of AI-enabled features.
