Google Wallet already offers a lot of features, and it could soon be gearing up to make international travel easier. It seems Google Wallet is preparing to offer a new way to pay by supporting Alipay Plus payments through QR codes. For reference, Alipay is a popular digital wallet in China, and Alipay Plus supports payment systems across several Southeast Asian countries.
Google Wallet could make international travel payments easier
Google Wallet appears to be stretching its wings to make things simple for international travellers. This addition could let users pay with Google Wallet by scanning Alipay Plus QR codes when they visit the region. Going into detail, folks at Android Authority, while digging through Google Wallet version 26.42.1003171897, have found the company working on a new “Overseas QR payments” option in app settings. There’s apparently a “Learn more” link on the page that leads to a Google Wallet support page for a feature called Traveler QR.
Google highlights that the feature will activate automatically when your phone detects that you’re in a supported region. The company mentions that it includes “any of the supported destinations listed above.” However, the only destination specifically mentioned, for now, is Alipay+ partner networks in Singapore.
The feature will activate automatically
There are chances this will eventually expand to Alipay Plus in Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and more. Google may still be working on the supported page, as it isn’t linked from any other public pages yet. Additionally, the mention of multiple supported destinations, but listing only Singapore, seems unusual. It’s clear enough that the feature may not be fully ready for a public launch.
From the looks of it, the feature doesn’t seem ready to launch anytime soon. We will share an update as we come across more details. So stay tuned for that.
