Google is reportedly working on an overhaul of the Song Search feature in its app that could introduce background listening. This will allow users to identify songs when they switch to another app. This comes as the Google app is gradually rolling out a redesigned voice search interface that brings Search, AI Mode, Live, and Song Search together on one page.

Folks at Android Authority, while digging through version 17.56.14 of the Google app, have managed to enable a feature that keeps searching for songs in the background. It’ll then surface a notification on the device when it identifies one, even if you’ve switched to another app. At the moment, Song Search needs you to stay on the page to identify the song. This means switching to another app won’t fetch a result, and you’ll have to start the process again.
The background listening feature will keep the microphone active when you switch to another app or to the home screen. However, it reportedly won’t stay that way for long, likely because of battery concerns. When it can’t find results, the notification will read, “Tap to search the music again.” It’ll then restart the process without opening the Google app manually.
Redirects to AI Mode
Meanwhile, when it identifies a song, tapping on it redirects users to an AI Mode result. For context, the current Song Search experience takes you to the standard Search results page for the song and artist’s name. This likely hints that AI Mode may become the default for the Google app’s song identification.
The report adds that it’s not clear when Google will roll out this new Song Search feature. But since it’s already functioning as expected, the rollout may happen soon. We will update when that happens.
