Google’s core apps do offer all the essential features that you’d expect. Even if there are any gaps, the company actively works to close them. Today, we’re seeing one such example. Google has announced that Sheets now natively supports box and whisker charts, one of the statistical chart types to show how a dataset is distributed. While Microsoft Excel has supported them for years, Google Sheets is catching up now with this new update. Here’s what it brings to the table.
Google Sheets can now create box-and-whisker charts natively
The next time you want to create a box and whisker chart, just select a range of raw numeric values; Sheets will automatically calculate the minimum, quartiles, median, maximum, mean, and outliers. In fact, you won’t need any helper formulas for this. You can also choose how Sheets calculates quartiles and show or hide inner points, outliers, mean markers, and mean lines.
Things don’t end there. This update also comes with enhanced Microsoft Excel import compatibility. What this means is Google Sheets can now handle Microsoft Excel files with box and whisker charts better. In comparison, importing these files into Sheets previously would remove the charts. That’s finally changing.
Starting to roll out already
Now, the charts retain their data references, calculations, and formatting when imported. Additionally, charts created in Sheets can also be exported to Excel as editable box-and-whisker charts, simplifying things for users. That’s pretty much everything about this Google Sheets update.
The support for box and whisker chart types in Google Sheets is starting to roll out. It will be available to all Workspace users and those with personal Google accounts. That said, the company notes that it could take up to 15 days for it to become available to everyone. So you may have to be patient if you don’t see it already.
