The tech industry is currently drowning in a wave of corporate layoffs. Amid this scenario, one high-profile Google executive just decided to pack his bags and walk away on his own terms. René Mayrhofer, Google’s Director of Android Platform Security, has officially resigned after nearly a decade with the tech giant. The reason for his sudden departure? A controversial new partnership that allows the Pentagon to use Google’s advanced artificial intelligence models for classified military operations.
In a fierce internal farewell letter shared with his colleagues—which he later published openly on his personal blog—Mayrhofer didn’t hold back, titling his message “Google Management Has Lost Its Moral Compass.”
A heavy clash of ethics
René Mayrhofer also works as a university academic in Austria. In his letter, he explained that leaving his dream job became “unavoidable” the moment top-level management signed the dotted line with the military. The brand-new deal grants the US Department of Defense the right to use Google’s AI models for “any lawful purpose,” a broad phrase that covers things like intelligence gathering and planning military operations.
As a dedicated pacifist, Mayrhofer found it impossible to align his personal values with the company’s new direction. He expressed serious concerns that these tools could easily fuel mass surveillance programs targeting regular citizens, including his own community in the European Union. “This deal implies that Google (AI) products will likely be used directly against me and mine,” he warned.
Quietly erasing the rules
This exit shines a bright light on how much Google’s internal culture has shifted in its race for AI dominance. Back in 2018, the company published a strict set of AI ethics principles that explicitly promised never to develop weapons or mass surveillance tools. However, management quietly erased those boundaries from their guidelines in February 2025. Mayrhofer also called out the company for secretly ditching its carbon-neutral goals just to keep up with the massive energy demands of training new AI models.
To make matters worse, Mayrhofer slammed executive leaders for a complete lack of transparency. He alleged that top management handed down these massive changes without any internal debate or communication.
Dissent in the ranks
Mayrhofer is far from lonely in his frustration. Over 600 Google employees previously signed a petition urging CEO Sundar Pichai to stay away from classified military contracts, and researchers at Google DeepMind have publicly shared their shame over the situation.
According to Business Insider, Google did not respond to a request for comment on this development. However, the company previously defended its new direction, telling the outlet that it’s proud to support national security while remaining committed to avoiding autonomous weaponry without human oversight.
Mayrhofer’s contract requires him to stay until August 31 to hand over his Android security tasks. But he has already completely disconnected from any active AI systems tied to the military deal. Moving forward, he plans to focus his energy on pure privacy and encryption protocols.
