Who would have thought the foldable form factor is here to stay? Admittedly, when Samsung debuted their first-ever foldable, we thought it would flop. But here we are, almost a decade later with more companies tossing their hats into the ring. Now, Google is hoping to make it easier for users to find apps designed for big screens—mainly tablets and foldables—in the Play Store by showing badges.
Google Play will show badges for apps designed for big screens
In the latest update to Google Play services, the company says they have made changes to the Google Play Store that will show users which apps are designed for big screens.
This is actually quite a nice and useful update. Tablets and foldables typically have different aspect ratios and resolutions compared to our phones. This means that some apps might not scale properly and look weird. We’ve seen that happen before with Apple’s iPad. Some apps designed for the iPhone are available on the iPad. However, because of the size and aspect ratio, it creates unsightly black bars by the side.
With this update, users can quickly find apps that are designed for their larger devices. Google says that these apps will have a badge to make it easier to identify. That being said, Android Authority notes that this version of the Play Store hasn’t rolled out yet. We’re not sure when it will begin its rollout, so you’ll want to keep an eye out for it.
Google is also expected to launch its new Pixel 11 smartphones later this year. This includes the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, which, based on our exclusive CAD renders, looks similar to last year’s model.
What else is coming?
In addition to highlighting apps designed for big screens, the upcoming update has other changes to the Play Store. This includes finding an additional view of an app’s content rating. Users can also access Collections on tablets and also review subscription plans users own in-app ratings. This means that you get to say if this subscription is worth the price or not.
