Google is adding another payment method for users to pay for apps, games, or in-app purchases on Google Play: Venmo. This move is aimed at offering more flexibility at checkout. This is just as important as getting users to download apps and games by consistently refining the Play Store experience. Since Venmo is effectively exclusive to the US, this change really only applies to US residents.
Google Play Store adds Venmo as a new payment method for apps and games at checkout
Google says that starting today, users can link their Venmo account to the Google Play Store as an additional payment method for apps, games, and any other digital content within the store. Users can use their Venmo balance or a linked payment method for purchases. As things stand currently, Google Play Store already offers debit and credit cards, Cash App, and PayPal as payment methods at checkout. Venmo now joins this long list as the third-party payment option.
If you’re a regular Venmo user, this addition should be appealing. You can now link Venmo to the Play Store and spend that accumulated balance without having to share your personal payment details with Google.
Took its time, but it’s finally here
It’s surprising that Google took so long to bring this integration. The company added Cash App as a payment method on Play over two years ago. Meanwhile, PayPal has been available as a billing option for more than a decade. So, users who currently rely on Venmo for payments, cash transfers, and more, your digital wallet just gained a new possibility. This can be quite handy.
You can link your Venmo account by opening the Play Store app and then tapping your profile picture in the top right corner. From there, tap “payments & subscriptions,” then Payment method. Scroll down to see the option to add Venmo.
