The UIs of apps have evolved over time, typically responding to the way we use our apps, design language, and so on. So, it’s really not surprising to see Google make some tweaks to the bottom bar of Google Photos, giving it a cleaner and less obstructive look.
Google Photos ditches old bottom bar for newer, cleaner one
According to a report from 9to5Google, the latest version of Google Photos has a new bottom bar. In the past, Google Photos had a dedicated/fixed bottom bar. That’s completely fine, and we don’t think it was ever really an issue. However, the latest update has ditched that for a floating pill.
It’s a bigger change than you think, because now you can see a bit more information underneath it. In the past, the bar would be blocking the way, so you’d have to scroll a bit more to see what’s below. However, overall, this gives the app a much cleaner and modern look. It’s also part of a design language that we’re seeing applied to other apps, not just on Android but on iOS too.

Google also appears to have decided to split the bar. Photos, Collections, and Create are still grouped together. However, the “Ask” button now sits separately to the right. But that’s not all. The update also moves the day indicator to another floating pill at the top of the screen—it disappears after you finish scrolling.
For those who prefer a cleaner and unobstructed look, this change might be welcome. But for those who prefer the old look, you can go to the three-dot menu to enable “Show dates in grid.” This will bring part of the older design back.
A lot of changes
That being said, we’ve noticed that Google has been putting in a lot of work into the Google Photos experience. The latest update is a small tweak to the UI, but there are a lot of other bigger changes over the past few months.
This includes giving Google Photos an AI-powered wardrobe feature, allowing users to virtually try on clothes with the help of AI. More recently, Google also brought a Video Remix feature to the app, which turns your video clips into artwork. All this is part of Google’s attempt to turn what used to be just a photo storage service into something more.
