Cropping a photo is pretty straightforward. You select the area you want, and you should be good to go. However, for some reason, the crop tool in Google Photos has been acting up for some. The good news is that Google has fixed it.
Google Photos crop tool gets fixed
In a post on Google’s support page, the company has revealed that it is rolling out several improvements to the crop tool for Google Photos. This includes a couple of bug fixes and a slight change to the animation.
For starters, Google says that Google Photos will now show accurate image previews. “We fixed an issue where the image preview shrank when you pulled the crop handles.” The company also made cropping and rotation more reliable. It seems that in the previous version, there was a bug that caused the photo’s shape to flip or change unexpectedly. Now, it shouldn’t be a problem anymore.
Last but not least, Google says it has made the cropping animation smoother. “We added fluid, responsive animations for dragging, rotating, and adjusting aspect ratios.” All in all, it’s not exactly a groundbreaking update. However, if you have experienced some cropping-related issues on Google Photos, hopefully this update will address it. The updates are rolling out as we speak.
Coming a long way
Google has made substantial changes to Google Photos over the years. Back then, Google Photos was merely a platform for users to backup their photos to. However, since then, a lot has changed. Now, Google Photos is more than just a photo backup tool. It is an image editor, and we’re seeing AI integration as well.
This comes in the form of Nano Banana, Google’s AI-powered image generator. With this integration, it gives users the ability to use AI to edit their photos. This is quite useful, especially for users who might not really know how to go about making their photos look better.
A more recent report has also revealed how Google Photos is working on a digital closet feature. This lets users pull outfits from images, manage them, and potentially even let them try them on virtually. That feature hasn’t rolled out yet, but maybe Google will have more details to share at I/O 2026.
