A few days ago, we learned that Vivo worked directly with Meta to boost the experience in social media apps. However, it seems this was just a glimpse of what was to come for the entire ecosystem. During the Android Show: I/O Edition 2026, Google announced it is finally fixing the media quality issue on Instagram through a major partnership with Meta, starting with Android 17.
How Google and Meta are fixing Android uploads to Instagram
The upcoming Android 17 update will bring a “flagship treatment” to the Instagram experience. Users can look forward to Ultra HDR support for both capture and playback, ensuring that photos retain the vibrant colors and realistic lighting they have on the native camera app.
The integration goes deeper than just colors. Google is bringing its famous Night Sight technology directly into the Instagram camera. This will allow for clear shots in low-light settings without leaving the app. Additionally, newly built-in video stabilization tools will help keep your Reels smooth, even if you are recording while moving.
Optimizing the “Journey to Post”
Google claims to have “completely optimized” the entire pipeline from the moment you capture a photo to the moment you hit “post.” In side-by-side tests using the Universal Video Quality model, Google stated that uploads from Android flagship devices now score the same as, or even better than, the “leading competitor.”
New creator tools
Beyond quality fixes, the Instagram Edits app is receiving several Android-exclusive AI features:
- Smart Enhance: A one-tap tool to upscale the clarity of photos and videos using on-device AI.
- Sound Separation: This tool can identify and isolate different audio tracks—like wind, background noise, or voices—allowing creators to remove unwanted sounds easily.
- Screen Reactions: A new system-wide feature arriving first on Pixel devices that lets you record your screen and your front-facing camera simultaneously for reaction videos.
Lastly, Instagram is now fully optimized for Android tablets. The app now features a layout that finally makes use of the extra screen real estate, something that those who prefer working on a larger canvas will appreciate.
