We imagine that there are probably a bunch of conversations you have in Google Messages that you interact with quite often. As it stands, the app lets you pin up to 20 conversations. However, it seems that Google is working on a new Google Messages UI that reduces pinning to up to 6 chats, but its new UI might make it worth it.
Google Messages changing pinning UI
According to the folks at Android Authority, they discovered an upcoming change that will change the pinning UI of Google Messages. As it stands, when you pin messages in the app, it shows up like a regular conversation except with a pin icon to indicate that it has been pinned.
But now, as you can see in the screenshots and video, Google is changing that. Instead of regular conversations, pinned messages now show up at the top of the chat with larger icons. We reckon it looks better and more obvious. However, the downside is that Google is dramatically reducing the number of pinned conversations from 20 to 6.
That’s quite a huge cut and we’re sure that there are going to be some users who will be affected. However, if you don’t have that many pinned conversations, it’s not really an issue. But if you do, then maybe it’s time to trim that down and focus on the ones that you really want sitting at the top.
This looks kind of familiar
If you’re wondering why this looks familiar, it’s because Google isn’t the first to use this UI. Some of you might recall that back in iOS 14, Apple introduced a similar layout. The company opted to go with this grid-like layout for pinned conversations rather than traditional vertical lists.
Of course, we’re not saying Google copied Apple. Both companies have been known to “borrow” design elements from each other from time to time. For Google Messages, users have the option to rearrange these pins. According to Android Authority, these icons will show the profile photo of that contact. But when a new message comes in, that icon is replaced with a preview of the message.
We’re not sure when this version will be released to the public. But it’s worth keeping an eye out for if you appreciate these changes.
