Google introduced Rich Communication Services, or RCS, to Android back in 2019. However, despite having advanced features like read receipts, typing indicators, media, and emoji sticker support, many users are hesitant to switch to it. A key reason is the rise of promotional and spam messages. To fix this, Google Messages is reportedly working on a feature that will make it easier for the user to filter out spam messages.
Google Messages is testing a new feature to combat spam
As per a report, Google Messages is testing a new feature that makes it easier to distinguish business communications in the inbox. The tech giant is revising the branding of RCS for Business to improve transparency. RCS messages sent by the businesses will now carry a rounded-square logo across the conversations list, chat view, and details screen. For reference, the current logo is placed inside a circular frame, which is similar to what you see on a normal account’s profile icon.
The square profile icon will make it easier to differentiate between a verified business account and a non-verified business/personal account. Further, it will also help promotional messages or spam be immediately recognizable. On the other hand, conversations with regular accounts will retain circular icons. Basically, the users will be able to filter out messages at a quick glance.
The new feature will make it easier to access the verification details of the businesses
Alongside the new square icon, Google is simplifying how users access verification details of an account. Currently, the user must click on the shield icon to see the detailed information about the account. In the under-testing build, the extra step has been removed. The verification details can be directly accessed within a dedicated business profile page.
Further, the redesigned experience can be accessed on the latest Google Messages Android app version 20260424 beta. However, Google has not shared any official words on the stable release of the new update yet. Also, the appearance of the features on beta doesn’t guarantee they will be released for the general audience.
