Finding information with your voice on Android is getting a notable visual and functional makeover. Google appears to be testing a major redesign for the familiar voice microphone icon found on the home screen bar widget and inside the main Google app for Android, bringing several distinct search modes together under a single interactive interface.
A unified toolbar inspired by Google Lens
In the current design introduced earlier this year, tapping that four-color microphone simply transcribes whatever you say into a standard Google search query, with a separate shortcut for identifying music. The experimental layout changes that workflow completely, 9to5Google reports.
Borrowing a visual concept similar to Google Lens’s Search, Translate, Live, and Create switcher, the new setup introduces a dedicated toolbar at the bottom of the screen. This allows you to seamlessly slide between four distinct functions: classic Search, AI Mode, Search Live, and Song Search.

Animated waveforms and smart defaults
When you select standard Search, the new interface features a fresh four-bar audio waveform that animates across the screen, displaying a live transcription at the top as you speak. When your question is complete, tapping on the next arrow will immediately submit it. Tapping the stop button on the left opens a conventional Search box with your transcribed text. This allows you to make manual edits before you search.
If you want a more conversational experience, Search Live offers the same interactive, back-and-forth dialogue found in Google’s recent AI tools. On the other hand, AI Mode handles more complex, multi-step queries directly. And when you want to find a song playing in your area, Song Search is still just a tap away.
The system remembers which mode you used last and defaults to Search or AI Mode the next time you tap the mic icon.
Limited rollout in the latest beta
This voice search redesign is not yet widely available to all Android users. It is currently appearing only for select testers running the latest beta version of the Google app. Google has not officially confirmed when or if this updated interface will reach the stable channel.
