Google has announced that it’s killing support for Gmail’s “Send as” feature for third-party email addresses, starting January 2027. This means users will no longer be able to send emails from services like Yahoo or Outlook through the Gmail web interface. Well, it’s a pretty handy option if you manage a bunch of email addresses on different platforms.

Google says the change affects both the web version of Gmail and the mobile app. According to Google’s dedicated support page, the reason for discontinuation of the ‘Send as’ feature is that it requires “disproportionate maintenance resources.” To access your third-party mail from 2027, you will need a dedicated mail client or a desktop app.
The “Send as” feature lets you send emails from another email address you own, such as a work email or a non-Gmail account like Hotmail or Yahoo. However, starting in January 2027, Gmail will no longer let you send emails from third-party email accounts on the web or through its Android and iOS apps.
You will no longer be able to add or sync third-party email accounts in Gmail on the web. But the feature will still be available in the Gmail mobile app. So you’ll still be able to check emails from those accounts. Although you won’t be able to send from them using the “Send as” feature.
Changes to Gmailify and POP on the web
The change also affects Gmailify and POP mail fetching on the web. The former brings Gmail features like spam filters, labels, and inbox organization to third-party email accounts. However, Gmail-to-Gmail aliases and the “Send as” feature for Google Workspace accounts will continue to work as usual.
While that’s that, many users on Reddit are seemingly furious about this change. Many vented their disappointment and looked at this move as Google’s attempt to push more users toward paid subscription services, like Google Workspace and Google One. Some even went on to note that they plan to leave Gmail.
